If Zoltraak so OP, why doesn’t Frieren/Copyren use it to fight each other?: a silly tactics essay

Madhouse is absolutely killing it with their gorgeous fight scenes that also make more sense the more you dig into them. In this episode, it's the senior citizen fight scene, where Frieren busts out the scary spells for the first time after telling us that Zoltraak is fast, efficient, powerful, the best combat spell etc etc. So why don't they use it against each other? The answer is this 2-second scene:

Let’s review what we’ve been told about Zoltraak. It’s “piercing magic that pierced through the defensive magic of humans and magic resistant equipment, and directly destroyed the body”. Zoltraak is generally good at destroying physical things.

In turn, the hexagonal shield magic—as Qual deduces—“synchronises with offensive magic and disperses the power”. But this costs lots of mana, and is weak against attacks of physical mass.

The rock-paper-scissors of modern magic is, then, Zoltraak-shield-physical mass.

Another note: it seems possible to cast both a shield and another offensive magic (maybe only Zoltraak?) at the same time, as in Frieren and Denken’s duel, and as with Methode vs golems.

Back to the Frierens.

Zoltraak is fast, efficient in mana usage, and powerful. It’s “enough for mages of the modern era”. Frieren and Fern usually spam this one spell; Copyren also uses it against Denken and co. So they would like to open with it.

Knowing that, they both bring up the hexagonal shield, ready to disperse Zoltraak. But, they both realize that Frieren’s Zoltraak cannot defeat Frieren’s hexagon shield. Edel states the two methods of getting past a shield: breaking it by force, or bypassing it with speed. Neither can get a single Zoltraak off strong enough that can shatter the corresponding shield, so they start shifting their aim, but they react just as fast to each other so there’s no openings.

Then what about multiple Zoltraaks? Presumably they could both keep the shields up while also casting Zoltraak, so they could turtle down into a battle of attrition and see who makes a minor inefficient mistake. But! Copyren is facing two mages, not one. It will definitely lose in a shield-whittling contest. Even if they had infinite mana, if they sit there playing chicken with the shields, Fern will eventually blast it from behind.

Additional hypothesis: the mana used to defend against an attack with a hexagon shield will always be greater than the mana used to make the attack. Therefore, a mage should aim to always be on the offensive. In Ehre vs Fern, Fern kept creating distance and refused to get pinned down; Ehre got pinned down and that’s why she lost. Both Frierens have a motive to use as little defensive magic and as much offensive magic as possible.

Sadly, it’s a pretty empty room, with not much physical mass to use against each other; Copyren in particular probably wants to avoid eating up the walls of Spiegel’s hideaway. So they need to cast offensive magic, that isn’t Zoltraak, and that doesn’t need existing physical mass.

Before Zoltraak leading to shield leading to mass attacks, it’s likely there wasn’t that much of a need for physical mass specifically. Edel says it takes more mana to conjure than it does to manipulate the environment. But if mass isn’t a requirement, then ye olde mages probably wouldn’t have focused on magics with the weakness of, say, needing a water source nearby (sorry Kanne). It makes sense that old-fashioned attacks were therefore magics that expressed some kind of energy without significant mass: fire, lightning, wind. (Ty @wtfoctagon for laying out this pre-Zoltraak idea!)

Simultaneously, this brings up an interesting question: what kind of defence were pre-Zoltraak (therefore pre-hexagon) mages using?

1. Some other [Defence Magic], but weaker

2. A Warrior

3. More offence!

Forget this newfangled modern mass stuff. Frieren and Copyren go right back to Cast Fireball, the force of which can be dissipated and defended against with Cast Fireball.

Not using the hexagonal shield is actually a more mana-efficient defence. If Zoltraak’s out of the question, then there’s no real need to invest in the heavy anti-Zoltraak shield. And we have already seen a previous example of offence as defence: Fern vs Lugner.

We also see one more example of this kind of old-fashioned mass-less attack in the other senior citizen brawl, where Denken uses Waldgose (tornado) + Daosdorg (fire). It eats up enough mana that even Denken is tapped out by the end. Of course, for Frieren vs Denken, she has so much more mana that there’s no problem spending it on a full-body shield. But if she did the same versus her clone, she would rapidly start losing the attrition battle. So she has to defend with a less costly though much messier method.

One more advantage of non-mass elemental magic: for Copyren, using Hellfire magic is much more of an area-of-effect spell, which might be able to touch Fern as well. For Frieren, it’s a no-brainer to go along with splashing mana everywhere, to help hide Fern’s presence.

Of course, that’s not to say that they won’t take advantage of mass when it exists. The use of Hellfire to make lava out of the falling pillar/wall is a delicious and nutritious anime original addition, and it also makes so much sense.

tl;dr: the Frierens tested and discarded the possibility of a modern-style Zoltraak fight in as much time as it takes us to say "holy shit".

Brasilia, oder: Wo Pflugzeug war soll Flugzeug werden

Heute habe ich die Ehre, auf Einladung von Marcelo Neves an der juristischen Fakultät in Brasilia meine Forschung zu juridischen Kulturtechniken vorzustellen, insbesondere das Projekt zu Aby Warburg. Mich ehrt besonders, dass Ricardo Spindola mit mir debattieren wird.

Brasilia ist eine Hauptstadt der Moderne. Brasilia ist, so sagt man, auf dem Reißbrett entstanden, ist also das, was auch manche Fäden in der Moderne sein sollen: gerissen. Diese Hauptstadt (eine Kapitale) lässt mit ihrer Gerissenheit in der Moderne noch einmal Antike nachleben, genauer gesagt den Akt, mit Linien Städte oder Staaten zu gründen, wo vorher keine gewesen sein sollen.

Mit demjenigen Zeug, das man Pflug nennt, sowie einem Ochsen und einer Kuh hat man das einmal gemacht, Leon Battista Alberti erzählt davon noch in seinem Lehrbuch von der Sache der Gebäude. Die Erbauer von Brasilia haben, noch einmal 500 Jahre nach Alberti, Antike nachleben lassen, gleichzeitig aber das Imaginäre der Gründung gleichzeitig mit dem Flug, dem Abheben und dem Take-Off assoziiert, wie man das in der Moderne und unter dem Dogma großer Trennung so gemacht hat:

Vielleicht war das ein Versprechen, eventuell sogar von der Art, wie sie auch Aby Warburg zu machen pflegte. Das heißt, das dieses Versprechen verbindlich gewesen wäre und doch den mal witzigen, mal dämonischen Untergründen solcher Versprechen aufsaß. Raider heißt jetzt Twix und St. Petersburg wieder St. Petersburg.

Der frühe Entwurf des Stadtplans, den Lucia Costa zeichnete, wurde unter anderem als Form eines Flugzeuges interpretiert, woraufhin er irritiert reagiert haben soll, weil er wohl an ein diplomatisches Wesen, nämlich einen Falter gedacht haben soll. Das eine schließt das andere allerdings nicht aus, nicht in der Welt des Traum, des Witzes und damit auch jener Versprechen, zu deren größten Kennern Aby Warburg zählte: Mitten in der Moderne, mitten im technischen Gerät sitzt ein Insekt, mitten im Menschwerk das Animal. Warum denn nicht? Andere sagen das doch auch. Als Lúcio Costa eines Morgens aus unruhigen Träumen erwachte, fand er sich auf dem Hochland in einen ungeheuren Stadtfalter verwandelt. Oder aber so: Als Lucio Costa eines Morgens aus unruhigen Träumen erwachte, fand er sich auf dem Planalto in einen ungeheuren Piloten verwandelt. Was und wie auch immer, den Wettbewerb hat er gewonnen.

Idea vincit, das kann man wohl so übersetzen: das Bild siegt (vincio) oder bindet (vinco), auch wenn das Bild ein Bau und der Bau eine Puppe ist.

Rechtstheoretisch macht der Akt, der dank und durch Linien etwas gründet, dasjenige, was George Spencer-Brown zu einer Art Gebot des Kalküls der Formen erhob: er zeichnet eine Unterscheidung, draws a distinction. Das ist nicht nur mathematisches Kalkül, kann nicht nur juristische Methode sein, es kann auch eine juridische Kulturtechnik sein.

Zwischen 1990 und 2000 gab es an den deutschen Rechtsfakultäten zwei interessante, herausragende Positionen, die zu solchen Zeichnungen/ Drawings Ausführliches zu sagen hatten: Das waren (erstens) Gunther Teubner, in dessen Buch von 1990 das Formenkalkül von Spencer-Brown (wie Luhmann) in einer Theorie ausdifferenzierter sozialer Systeme auftauchte. Er eröffnete mit dem einem Zug eine Rechtstheorie des Zuges, der zügigen Form und schließlich von Formeln, die er in einer Kette von förmlichen (!) Anregungen, die über Luhmann zu Warburg führen, später dann auch Transzendenz-, Konsistenz- und Kontingenzformeln nannte. Zweitens war das eine Position, die sich selbst erst in den 10 Jahren abzeicjneze, dann aber umso erstaunlicher, sonderbarer und anregender: Cornelia Vismann. Ihre Arbeiten zu gründlichen Linien, die man auch als Fäden, Furchen oder Falten verstehen kann, markieren den Ausgangspunkt zur Geschichte und Theorie juridischer Kulturtechniken, wie sie inzwischen, zwar vereinzelt und doch international gesammelt, hier und entsteht.

Beide, Teubner und Vismann haben das Zeichnen (so will ich den Zug übersetzen) rekursiv verstanden. Das heißt, dass man Linien aus dem macht, was man bereits hat, um zu bekommen, was man noch nicht hat. Rekursion bedeutet: man kommuniziert Kommunikation, man spricht das Sprechen, schreibt das Schreiben, zählt die Zahlen. Während Teubner die Idee der Rekursion im Rahmen einer Theorie ausdifferenzierter, autopoietischer Systeme und Selbstreferenz verortete, verortete Vismann die Idee der Rekursion in einer Archäologie des Begehrens.

Teubners Rekursion hält sich in der Aktualität laufender Kommunikation auf, er bewahrt darin etwas von der Moderne und dem Ideal der Moderne. Vismanns Idee der Rekursion kommt im Vergleich zu den Abstraktionen und Systembildung, den Codes und Reflexionen bei Teubner verschlammt und staubig daher: die Rekursion sitzt auf, darum forscht Vismann archäologisch.

Mir geht es heute nicht darum, zwei hochgeschätzte, geliebte Kollegen gegeneinander auszuspielen oder ihre Vorzüge und ich Nachteile so zusammenzusetzen, dass eine dritte, nun perfektionierte Theorie dabei herauskäme. Ich will nicht die Mängel Teubners mit der Fülle Vismanns stopfen und nicht die Mängel Vismann mit der Fülle Teubners; auch will ich die Exzesse Teubners nicht mit einer Vismanndiät in Maß bringen oder die Exzesse Vismanns durch Teubneraskese zügeln. Die beiden haben nur eins gemeinsam: das sind die Probleme, die sie teilen. Ich will auf das Problem hin orientieren: es ist das Problem gründlicher Linien oder zügiger Formen, das sind Formen, durch die Regung geht.

Meine These lautet: will man über die Moderne oder über Multiplizität nachdenken, dann kommt man nicht drum herum, über gründliche Linien und zügige Formen nachzudenken, seien das nun wie bei Teubner Kommunikationen oder technisch und operativ gedacht Züge oder aber (objektorientiert und nach Vismann gedacht) Fäden/ threads, Falten/ foldings oder Furchen/ furrows. Man wird wie immer darüber nachdenken müssen, wie man Unterscheidungen zeichnet, das heißt auch: wie man Unterscheidungen wahrnimmt oder ausübt. Wenn man also darüber nachdenkt, kommt man in Bezug auf die Geschichte der Rechtswissenschaft im 20. Jahrhundert an einer weiteren Figur nicht vorbei: Das ist Aby Warburg. Seinen Beitrag will ich vorstellen und zur Diskussion stellen. Ich werde dazu kurz seine beiden 'Staatstafeln' vorstellen, erläutern, welche Rolle gründliche Linien dort spielen und schließlich darauf eingehen wie er so die Rechte aus den Lateranverträge wahrnehmen lässt. Die These lautet, dass Aby Warburg mit den beiden Tafeln das Manual und die Summa einer Rechtsgeschichte und Rechtstheorie vorgelegt hat, die - apophatisch gesagt - nicht allgemein, nicht universal, nicht ausdifferenziert und weder kontrafaktisch stabilisiert noch kontrafaktisch stabilisierend sein soll. Positiv ausgedrückt: er liefert eine besonderer Geschichte und eine besondere Theorie für das Recht, nämlich ein Recht, das unbeständig und polar sein soll- und dessen Rationalität darin liegt, Bewegungen und Regungen händeln zu können, die schwer berechenbar bis notorisch unkalkuierbar sind.

Headcanon.

Solas isn't technically bald, he just shaves, and he's very metycolous about it.

I think one of the things that always throws me (as the child of a late 80s/early 90s queer computer programmer) is how many people seem to just not know enough about the language of tech to understand whether something is "new and revolutionary" or whether the modern venn diagram of tech bros and marketing bros is a circle.

Like, don't get me wrong. I am HOPELESS about tech. My wife tries so hard to be calm about helping me troubleshoot tech issues, but I can tell she's trying not to bash her head into a walm about it.

That said, at least part of that dynamic is that I **do** actually know just enough about HARDWARE to get myself in deep shit.

So like. One time. My operating system crashed in the middle of a game of Among Us, and then when my computer rebooted, it had literally no trace left of an operating system and couldn't even have one redownloaded because it kept redoing the crash every time we tried to power it up to do so.

To this DAY my wife is not sure what the fuck I did. But her experience of that was me saying "hey baby, something weird is going on with my operating system and I can't power my computer back up" and because she wasn't in the room with me she was like just power cycle it and you should be fine and I was like no you don't understand

And this is a trend! Every 90 days I have to revalidate my email client for work so it can stay integrated with the ehr and I have NEVER!! ONCE!! MANAGED!!! To do this without somebody sitting down with me on zoom to first find the setting page because even though I know how to do it I can never find its location!

At the same time????? I can never just have a normal user issue??? And consistently everyone who troubleshoots my tech problems is just like "I have literally never seen this before what the FUCK did you do???"

This is a roundabout way of pointing out that because of my understanding of the language used to discuss knowledge around this topic, I am able to engage really deeply and complexly with tech research! And I think many people don't get that chance because it's not really "necessary" for an average user? But like. Honestly, being confused by computers is boring! And it means being an easy mark in an industry (practical technological development applications of number theory) where being a mark can literally undermine societies lol.

es ist mir eine große Ehre, diesen deutschen Gedenktag für die Opfer von Gewalt und Krieg mit Ihnen begehen zu dürfen.

Man kann sich kaum einen würdigeren Ort vorstellen, sich zu versammeln als hier. Dieses Gebäude hat in der dramatischen Geschichte Deutschlands eine so wichtige Rolle gespielt. Heute symbolisiert es das moderne und demokratische Deutschland.

Für mich persönlich ist dies ein wichtiger Augenblick. Meine starken familiären Bindungen zu Deutschland und alles Deutsche sind seit meiner Kindheit feste Bestandteile meines Lebens. Meine Gefühle für Deutschland sind innig und tief.

Auch für mich als Kronprinzessin und Repräsentantin des Königreichs Schweden ist dies ein bedeutender Moment.

Die Beziehungen zwischen meinem Land und Deutschland sind vielfältig, stark und reichen weit in die Geschichte zurück.

Gleichwohl waren sie in der Geschichte nicht immer friedlicher Natur. Daran sollten wir uns mit Demut erinnern, besonders an einem Tag wie diesem.

Vielleicht kennen einige von Ihnen noch das alte Kinderlied „Bet't Kinder, bet't / Morgen kommt der Schwed“ aus dem Dreißigjährigen Krieg. Als Schwedin ist mir bewusst, dass dieser Krieg lange als deutsche Ur-Katastrophe betrachtet wurde.

Im Jahr 1813 standen schwedische Truppen noch einmal auf deutschem Boden. Mein Vorfahr, Kronprinz Karl Johan, führte die Nordarmee aus Preußen, Russen und Schweden gegen das große Heer von Kaiser Napoleon an. Und obwohl Schweden zu den Siegern zählte, war die Zeit als Großmacht vorbei. Ganz bewusst wurde in Schweden der Grundstein für eine historische Zeitenwende gelegt.

Was wir an Macht und Ruhm verloren, gewannen wir in Form von mehr als zweihundert Jahren Frieden und schließlich unseres eigenen Wirtschaftswunders zurück.

Mein Land ist von Natur aus eng mit Deutschland verbunden. Seit fast eintausend Jahren gibt es starke kulturelle, sprachliche und wirtschaftliche Verbindungen über die Ostsee hinweg. Wir wurden gemeinsam von der Hanse, der Reformation und der Industrialisierung geprägt.

Der Zweite Weltkrieg veranlasste Schweden, sich von einem Großteil seines deutschen Erbes zu distanzieren. Doch seit die demokratische und wiedervereinte Bundesrepublik zu einem Stabilitätsanker für die Europäische Union geworden ist und Schweden Mitglied der EU ist, sind wieder enge Beziehungen zwischen unseren Ländern entstanden. Und heute sind wir zu unserem Glück vereint.

Hieraus können wir wichtige Lehren ziehen: Wie Länder und Völker in der Nähe zueinander und an dieser Nähe wachsen können. Wie wichtig der freie Fluss von Kultur und Ideen ist. Und wie viel auch plötzlich verloren gehen kann.

Meine Damen und Herren, kaum jemand weiß mehr über die Zerbrechlichkeit einer Zivilisation als das deutsche Volk.

Kaum jemand kennt den Unterschied zwischen Frieden und Krieg, zwischen Freiheit und Unterdrückung, zwischen Hoffnung und Abgrund, zwischen Normalität und Katastrophe besser. Aber auch ich habe dies nicht nur aus Büchern gelernt. Indem ich meiner Mutter und den Erzählungen über das Schicksal ihrer Familie zuhörte, bekam ich zumindest einen Bruchteil dieser bitteren Erfahrung vermittelt.

Die deutsche Erfahrung mag einzigartig sein, enthält aber Erkenntnisse, die weit über sie hinausreichen. Eine davon ist, dass Frieden und Freiheit keine Naturgesetze sind, ein für alle Mal gegeben. Sie sind ein Gut, das zerbrechlicher ist, als wir denken, und für das sich jeder von uns einsetzen muss; im Großen wie im Kleinen. Wir tun dies jeden Tag, indem wir Rücksicht nehmen und Respekt zeigen; als Staaten, indem wir unsere demokratischen Gesellschaftsordnungen und das Prinzip verteidigen, dass Recht vor Macht geht.

Ich sage das mit großem Ernst, denn wir versammeln uns hier in ernsten Zeiten.

Meine Damen und Herren,

Die Menschheit steht vor Herausforderungen, die immer schwieriger und dringlicher werden. Die Stimmung in der Welt ist so eisig wie seit langem nicht mehr. Die groß angelegte russische Invasion in der Ukraine bedroht den Frieden auf unserem

gesamten Kontinent, erschüttert die Grundfesten der Weltordnung und verursacht unermessliches menschliches Leid. Seit 633 Tagen werden Städte und Gemeinden zerstört, Hunderttausende Menschen getötet und Millionen vertrieben. Es ist ein Krieg, der uns an die dunkelsten Kapitel der europäischen Geschichte erinnert.

Hinzu kommen die Entwicklungen im Nahen Osten nach den schrecklichen Angriffen der Hamas auf israelische Zivilisten. Wir sehen entsetzliche Bilder aus Gaza mit großem menschlichen Leid. Natürlich hat auch Israel das Recht, sich in Übereinstimmung mit dem Völkerrecht zu verteidigen. Der Schutz aller Zivilisten, sowohl in Israel als auch in Gaza, muss garantiert und das humanitäre Völkerrecht respektiert werden. Zu jeder Zeit, unter allen Umständen.

Werte Mitglieder des Deutschen Bundestags, meine Damen und Herren,

meine Generation ist mit dem Fall der Mauer aufgewachsen. Ich wünschte, der Optimismus, der damals alle erfüllte, könnte die Welt auch weiterhin prägen.

Es gibt ein Wort, dessen Bedeutung ich am anschaulichsten von meinem Vater gelernt habe: Pflicht. Aber die Pflicht hat auch eine schöne Seite. Sie gibt uns die Möglichkeit, Teil von etwas zu werden, das viel größer ist als wir selbst.

Der Schwede Dag Hammarskjöld, ehemaliger Generalsekretär der Vereinten Nationen, schrieb einst folgende Zeilen: „Der Weg der anderen hat Rastplätze in der Sonne, wo sie sich treffen / Aber dies ist dein Weg / und jetzt, jetzt darfst du nicht scheitern. / Weine, wenn du kannst, weine, / aber klage nicht. / Der Weg hat dich gewählt – und du solltest dankbar sein.“

Meine Damen und Herren,

Wir müssen gemeinsam Verantwortung übernehmen. Wir dürfen niemals die Lehren aus den Schrecken von Krieg und Tyrannei vergessen. Und es ist wichtig, unsere Kinder und Jugendlichen daran zu erinnern, dass aus den schwierigsten Erfahrungen eine Kraft zur Veränderung erwachsen kann.

Dies ist eine Zeit wichtiger Entscheidungen. Eine Zeit der Prüfungen. Aber auch eine Zeit der Chancen.

Da unsere Völker und Regierungen gemeinsam handeln, um dem ukrainischen Volk zu helfen, sich gegen die russische Aggression zu wehren, bin ich überzeugt, dass unsere Bemühungen Früchte tragen werden.

Es ist eine Quelle der Hoffnung, dass die Regierungen und Völker im demokratischen Europa in einer schweren Zeit zusammenhalten.

Die deutsche Erfahrung zeigt, dass es möglich ist, selbst die dunkelste Vergangenheit zu überwinden.

Heute ist Deutschland ein Land, auf das wir Schweden blicken, wenn es um die gemeinsame Aufgabe geht, ein Europa des Friedens und der Freiheit zu errichten.

Unsere Länder sind in einer Wertegemeinschaft vereint, in unserem Verständnis von Freiheit, Demokratie und Menschenrechten, in unserem europäischen und internationalen Engagement. Und wir stehen heute noch enger zusammen als früher. Seit Februar 2022 benutzt die Welt das Wort ‚Zeitenwende‘. Auch Schweden erlebt gerade eine solche Zeitenwende und mit seinem Beitritt zur NATO die größte sicherheitspolitische Veränderung seit den Napoleonischen Kriegen.

Europa kommt jetzt zusammen, um sich den Herausforderungen zu stellen, vor denen unser Kontinent steht. Gleichzeitig müssen die großen Fragen der Zukunft angegangen werden wie Umwelt- und Klimaschutz sowie Möglichkeiten und Risiken neuer Technologien. Dies wird außergewöhnliche Anstrengungen erfordern.

Aber ich bin überzeugt, dass diese Anstrengungen unternommen werden und dass die schwedisch-deutsche Zusammenarbeit in dieser neuen Ära noch weiter ausgebaut wird.
